'Living a Nightmare': Families of Missing Teens Desperately Seek Information After Ski Resort Inferno
The loved ones of teens unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a venue in a Switzerland's ski resort are confronting an agonising period of uncertainty for answers and requesting any details about their loved ones publicly.
The inferno engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of New Year's Day. Verified video show the roof structure catching alight as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of 40 people and hurt another scores more. A spokesperson said on the latest update that the majority of the those hurt have been accounted for, with efforts ongoing to name the final individuals.
In the interim, loved ones have been posting on online platforms to appeal for clues about their friends who were present at the venue that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are currently unknown, according to an appeal from his family.
The resident of Lutry near the city, told a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the same in Bern, but could not find him.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's terrible," she stated.
She explained that some of his friends had been found with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they experienced hell."
The Italy's foreign ministry has said that six of its young people have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage junior golfer, originally from Genoa but now residing in Dubai.
The national sporting body has said that he is dead, without mentioning the tragedy, honoring a "talented young man who embodied dedication and authentic values."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An representative has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is still pending.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise unaccounted for. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the bar.
"Someone with him told me they ran away after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he couldn't see him anymore," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
