Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after House committee released his regular messages with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

The economist stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their progress".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The newly public emails revealed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it accepted the economist's determination to resign.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement arrives after both chambers of Congress voted on this week to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has stated he plans to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pressure from his base.

Message Details

A collection of financier-linked correspondence made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications revealed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link the official to notable international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to reestablish confidence and fix connections with the persons most important to me".

Career Background

Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He led the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in the capital where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was not connected with the organization.

Summers became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
