Following multiple episodes of suspense, schemes and backstabbing, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a thrilling end
Warning: spoilers ahead - This article reveals details from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Over the course of the show, audiences saw murders, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that pierced all tension.
However on Thursday night, the ultimate victor of the inaugural celebrity edition emerged triumphant.
Out of nineteen participants, just a handful remained: Deceivers and faithfuls facing off for the winnings.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the final players.
In the end, funny man Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising result that went viral and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he exclaimed, revealing to the other players that he was actually a traitor. "I'm an awful human being."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "It's all right."
Social media immediately exploded with this development. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," commented a viewer.
"There could not have been a better conclusion," stated a different person, while a third described it as "the television highlight of the year."
The organization he selected, Neuroblastoma UK, gets to keep all the prize money, with the final pot reaching eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
Alan Carr's transformation from comic relief to strategic player was one of the standout highlights of the season.
However, his victory still left the nation surprised, according to entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, of all people, pulling off a masterclass in deceit felt just as probable as him keeping a straight face through his comedy routines."
During follow-up conversations, fellow players summed up why no one had ever really suspected him.
"Alan could have come down to the morning meal in traitor attire and I still wouldn't have thought he was a traitor. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"Most people didn't target him because how can you eliminate a person so charming?" questioned a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the program.
"I'd like to do it again... I doubt it would be successful again!"
Thursday evening's installment was lengthened to over an hour on television. There was a different start than typical episodes, as all the celebs were aware who would appear at the breakfast table.
Viewers heard some very uplifting, and very un-Traitors-esque soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from each of the finalists' experience in the game.
True to form, Alan Carr provided some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I started the competition a bit of a nervous wreck. I've betrayed close allies under the bus, I've eliminated national treasures openly. Apparently I'm a better liar and player than I believed."
At the same time, another contestant noted that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than playing for England", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning in the episode, various contestants appeared to be making a bid to become the fashion standout of the castle, taking over from an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at the morning meal looking like a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, later switching into an embellished light-colored outfit.
But he was out-jacketted by another contestant's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the competition, with the final players getting on board a locomotive called - of course - The Traitors Express.
This task saw them ripping up images of eliminated players. Spare a thought for one participant who managed to get hit in the head THREE times by the lid of a substantial container.
Before long, it was time for the elimination discussion.
The deceivers did a pinky promise beforehand, pledging to support each other. "We've come a long way, I won't betray him," said a player, while the other simply laughed.
However, one did stick to his promise. But, having slipped unnoticed for the majority of the competition, their partner still got the most votes.
The remaining traitor appeared to be experiencing significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Being alone, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, without direction."
Online platforms and viewers were similarly upset.
"I hoped against this contestant to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," commented a commentator.
"Your legacy will remain in Traitors history," posted a different viewer.
However, there remained no time to dwell on their elimination. Before long, they were at the endgame - which was what we were really all here for.
The last players gathered around the ceremonial fire. And the alliance broke down, precisely when it mattered the most, in a truly WTF moment.
One contestant was eliminated in dramatic fashion - following a surprising decision from their partner, who turned against them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back at the final moment in that manner," said the ousted contestant. Later, it was revealed that if they ever communicate, the betrayed player refers to the other by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, only three contestants remained in the game: the final trio.
A contestant, appearing quite pleased, chose to conclude the competition. So did another, and it all came down to the final participant, who did the same - which meant that the deceiver was the winner.
According to commentators, the moment where the other players consoled the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it will be a contender for outstanding scene at television honors," they said.
Fortunately, the champion soon recovered from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"Such an emotional journey. I was awful at lying, my expressions gave me away and here I am a winner," he said.
He also joked about that infamous murder - his best friend during the initial stages - by leaning toward the presenter in the final scene and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The last few weeks of famous people scheming, plotting and the occasional unexpected moments may seem like a bizarre fantasy. But it really did occur. It will be remembered fondly.
