At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Most Extensive Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.
Local authorities confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Criminal Expansion
The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces reported more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
